This is a photo of me at Hilary’s General Store near Kapkatet Market in Bomet County, Kenya. It was snapped by a criminal investigator whose work I was documenting for a podcast series. By that point, she and I had spent nearly every single second of a month together. Hilary’s store, owned by my story subject’s best friend, was a place where I’d spent many hours: drinking soda, waiting until she pulled up so I could jump into her SUV and take off to interview the next witness.
This picture reminds me of how thrilled, exhausted, and happy I felt during those days. More importantly, though, it reminds me of who took it: a brave, indefatigable person who trusted me enough to let me bear witness to her story and invite me into her community. Whether I am working on a podcast, or a documentary, or even a narrative film, the person whose story I am telling remains the most important. I am humbled to have been entrusted with so many stories and proud that my work has amplified those stories across so many outlets including This American Life, NPR, Al Jazeera, and The Guardian.
